Hi
I was trying to help my 82 year old father inlaw, he was told by a plumper he needed a new pump fitting, but he wanted quite a lot of money so to help him I bought a brand new Will gold pump off EBay that matched what he had already.
I turned off the values either side of the old pump took the old pump out and fitted and wired the new one, turned on the water side value and bled the air out using screw on side, then opened the other value.

After I finished and turned power back on the pipes would make a very load banging noise every 10 to 20 minutes !! The pipes either side of pump were hot but radiator were cold !
Tired to put old pump back on but the water in gate values would not close property!

Power was on boiler was on I turned up thermostat but just the odd banging of pipe's and no radiators.
He lives in a bungalow and pump was in the loft.

Would air in the system cause this ?

Any help would be good

Have you got the pump in the right way round? There will be an arrow on the casing indicating direction of flow.

Have you checked that the pump impeller is turning?
How far past the pump is the pipework getting hot?

Don't you think that the plumber who would have known what to do was really worth "quite a lot of money"?

Lets analyse what is a reasonable price?

For labour I would say £84 would be reasonable. He is meant to fit an energy efficient smart pump and even the cheapest is about £135. So that's a total of £219. So was it much more than that?

The Wilo Gold is a standard efficiency pump which should not be fitted any more.

They are also seriously out of date and have not been made for over 15 years!

Buying an out of date pump from Ebay has no warranty! The plumber would have guaranteed his work and supplied a new pump with a guaranty.

Took screw out the top of the pump and make sure impeller was running OK with a screw driver.
Pipe was quite hot both sides of pump for as far as I could feel.

QUOTE was £675 for the pump and a new covered / seal header tank.
I was quite confident I could make a simply change of a pump and we brought 1 of 9 new pumps some was selling for £50, so on paper it looked good a new pump fitted for only £50 a saving of £625.
But as I have pointed out I've had some bad luck with the gate cable not closing due to the crap in the pipe it attracts and my be air in the pipe and I need some help finding out what's gone wrong.

The shaft on pump valves can snap so you turn it but the valve will still be stuck in the off or almost off position, i would be checking this first, and with the £625 you saved a tenner on a new pair of valves is a bargin.

You haven't answered the question "how far".

It is important.

Is the body of the pump hotter than the pipes?
Sorry did say in post 6. Pump was same heat as pipes and pipes were hot both side of pump as far as I could feel / reach.
Power was going to pump.

as far as I could feel / reach.

Give us a clue then.

How long are your arms? Were they fully extended? So about 29 inches? Or do you mean you walked all the way along the room feeling them, so twelve feet? Or was there a wall or something meaning you could only reach a few inches?

I was in the loft and it was all a bit tight but pipe going to header tank felt hot all the way then other pipes went in ceiling (floor of loft) seemed hot near pump but a bit cooler as they disappeared about a meter away from pump.

Do you think it's a fault with pump or is air causing problems , I was going to drain system in the morning change the 2gate valves and refill and try again.

So one of the pipes was hot for about a metre, and one of the pipes was hot for some other distance. You don't want to say what that distance was?

BTW the pump usually has two 22mm pipes going into it, and neither of them go to the header tank, though there might be another, usually smaller, pipe that does.

I'm quite sure a pipe went to header tank but will check in the morning . the water in pipe went to the pump which was 22 mm will gold R's 50 pump and pipe out went to a 3port valve which T d the pipe and the they split into other pipes going all over.
