I have just had a bill for over £3200 to basically replace 89 slates. 150 man hours.
2 roofers £23 an hour
1 Labourer £19 an hour

Any advice?

Seems extremely expensive.

Rip-off, absolutely disgusting unless there was over £2000 in scaffold fees.

It only takes 2 minutes to remove a slate.

Yes and they never even fixed the problem. I had to get another contractor to fix the leak at additional expense. Now Im being take to court for full amount. I have offered him 2/3'ds of the bill but he has dug his heels in and now Im summoned to Court.

There's a whole range of similar "legal" issues on these forums - research and see what others were advised to do.

FWIW: start the recording and preserving of all evidential material from right now, have no further contact at all with the other side or their representatives, and get a free heads up with a solicitor.

Did they give you a quote prior to starting the job?

The cost is far from reasonable, I would've expected around £800 to be reasonable if the work was straightforward strip and replace + around £3-400 for scaffold.

Thanks everyone. I am in the process of going to court. Ill let you know how I get on. I can't justify paying for works not complete

How anyone can claim to know how much your slating job should have cost on the little detail you have given is beyond me.

Well, if you read again you will see that I wrote "if it were straightforward" and "expect". It was a guesstimate based on average costs and 34 years as a roofer.

89 tiles, 150 hours labour for 2 " roofers" and one labourer without scaffold @ £3200 is obviously a rip off unless the op left out it was a church steeple.

I replaced a tuder tile on a church roof last week. How much should I have charged for that?
