Hi there - if I turn the electric mains switch off the intruder alarm beeps every few seconds, presumeably to tell me that it is using the backup battery. If I left it overnight, would it just run down the battery and stop working or would it set an alarm?

If the battery goes flat then most probably the alarm will sound when power turns back on. Like when there's a power cut in the area and you hear a bunch of alarms going off.

The answer to that depends on a couple of factors...

How it is configured & programmed.

The relative states of it's back up batteries. There will be one in the panel and one in the external bell box as a minimum, there may be others.

A safe answer would be probably but not always, and as Steve says it may also sound when power is returned.

The ones I fitted would sound the alarm for 15 minutes which is legal maximum if the battery became discharged. There are two batteries, one in the alarm, one in the sounder, so in the case of a power cut the system runs unaffected until the main box battery becomes discharged. Should the power return even for a few seconds then bell box is activated again.

when my dad passed away his alarm kept going off we didnt have the alarm code
so it was switch off the mcb turn off alarm supply let the battery go flat but not resume the supply as that would recharge the battery
