Are all forums this bad??

Been watching this forum for a while and noticed some pretty horrendous things:

1) if someone hasn't done professional level research they get battered for being an idiot

2) if someone has tried to do a good level of research they get battered mercilessly for being an idiot and laughed at

3) if someone doesn't ask a professional RGI first they get destroyed by you vultures and told to get one and trust them implicitly

4) if they put up what a pro has advised them they get destroyed on boiler choice cos you all know better than their pro they have found???

I even read one of you morons saying that if you wanted proper professional advice then you should pay for it?!? Everyone in your industry offers free quotes so what that guy was saying is you will only get silly advice until you pay.

You aren't gods you know, you are hitlers.

Need to have a look at yourself and remember you play with gas and water, not blood and brains....

It's not everyone of course

Yeah to replace stuff oph. Seen several conversations debating the virtues of unvented combi vented etc and we were talking whole system redesign based on customer needs etc

The challenge (accusation really) was if you want to know what is best for you then you have to pay someone to tell you as free quotes will just be guesswork and take no interest until the job is theirs.....

I hit the "ignore" button on one of the most annoying contributors on the electrical forum and I find it much better without his banal (clue) arguing

Not a bad shout that Dave. I feel sorry for people coming on and asking serious questions and then just getting destroyed because they are trying to look after one of their most expensive and important domestic investments and they get absolutely destroyed because they haven't done all the gas courses.....its just a guy with a house and a family trying not to waste £3k or more!!

I have sympathy with some Registered Gas Installers because they are trained and examined in how to install gas appliances to a standard that is safe in a training system that does not really educate them about how to assist customers in the selection of a new heating system. ( source is two recently qualified RGIs ). Hence when they come face to face with a customer who has a sound knowledge about the design of the heating system some RGIs may feel threatened and go defensive. ( I accept that in the general public there are very few people with the knowledge to have valid input into the desgn of a heating system ).

When asked to propose a new heating system it is natural for an RGI to propose the use of equipment and methods he or she is well aquainted with. There is also a bias toward proposing a system which can be installed with the best profit to work ratio.

Yes but they should not be forcing their preference onto their customers. ( forcing as in inducing the customer to accept their recommendation as the best recommendation without discussing the pro and cons of it and other options )

There are, of course, two sides to every story!
On an open forum, such as this, there are all types of people, from many different backgrounds with a variety of attitudes and personality traits.
There are good and bad on both sides of the fence.
Birds of a feather will stick together.
For the greater part, the 'advice seekers' are the ones who benefit most from this forum - knowledge is gained (for free) that will help them achieve DIY goals themselves or make them better informed when seeking advice from tradesmen, thus saving them money.
The 'advice givers' get a 'like' or a 'thanks' and a bit of comradery from their peers (and quite often, critique!).
It is very frustrating for those of us, in the trade, to see the same questions being asked again and again, when answers can be found in either the FAQs or the archive. Also questions that cannot be answered for forum rule reasons and questions that are way beyond the scope of a "DIY" forum.
In addition... There are as many "cowboy customers" out there, as there are "cowboy builders" but that doesn't make for entertaining tv programmes I suppose!!

most of the time people do no research at all even thou they are spending a couple grand a saying comes to mind " a fool with his money are soon parted ".
find a rgi that is recommended by friends or family with PROVEN work record not just a passing comment because they fixed a tap ( real research required by yourself ) and because they are CHEAP . in reality all people are worried about is saving a couple of quid but compromise safety when in reality it would have been cheaper to pay for advice/repair in the first place ( sadly a lot of people are not competant ) . these days proper advice/repairs costs for which i think it should , we have spent thousands on learning the trade so they can make a living, if you can't take the light banter from professionals with FREE advice you know what you can do, that is the only fun we get out of helping you and stop being a cry baby ffs . oh have you actually got a plumbing problem ??? if not see your mummy she would be happy to hear your problems. this is a forum which everyone has an opinion which is good/bad so you have to make an educated choice through RESEARCH ( must admit some give advice through misguidance and through pure incompetence ) but you either take the advice or not, that is why its probably better to pay for advice with them being there in front of the problem . I'm getting bored now so grow up ffs take the rough with the smooth . hitlers my a-s
