Serious Drains Problem (moved from GD)

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but I'm in a panic here.
We have about 1ft of what smells like sewage water seeping up in the ground which is coming from our next door neighbours or a house lower down.

Had seven Trent out today and they put a dye in next doors toilet and said it came through the manhole cover in my yard so its not there problem

The side wall of the house is about a foot deep for its entire length and I just don't know who to contact for help or who's house is to blame.

My toilets and sink drains are all clear and running into the manhole no problems. Can anyone help with good advice please?

The water is unlikely to be coming from houses "lower down". More likely from houses "higher up".
It may not be waste water, it could be ground or rain water. It could be broken mains.
Was Severn Trent aware of it and did they try to identify the source?

If next door's toilet runs through a manhole on your property then that manhole is on a shared sewage line. It is Severn Trents responsibilty to maintain it.

Severn Trent should take a sample of the water for analysis to determine if it is sewage from a broken sewer, mains water from a burst main or ground water. If sewage or a burst main then they should be prepared to assist in locating and repairing the damaged pipe(s).

You could involve the Environmental Health Officer at the council who may be prepared to determine what it is and assist in rectifying the situation.

ST are responsible for shared drains and neighbour drains, serving the one property, from the point where it crosses the boundary. If the drain is leaking on the neighbours property, but the water is finding its way into the Op's lower property next door, it still remains the neighbouring property's problem to sort out. ST have no jurisdiction in that instance.
