Macallister 1400w slide saw, weird motor issue

...was working fine then started doing this. Brushes? Anything more serious and I suspect it's for the bin.

I had a Macallister (B&Q Own brand) lawn scarifier that had a similar motor problem. I knew it was cheap n nasty when I bought it, and got some use out of it. Phone the number in the back of the manual and eventually they'll tell you to take it back to the shop with your receipt.... which you do still have right?!?!?

Of course I don't have the receipt Purchased as a beater tool, just wondering if I can get it back working with something simple or if it's a skip job. Found a site which supplies parts for not silly money, but I've never heard a motor make that noise before.

It's a gonna... beater tools in particular need their receipts keeping! 'cause then you can get a brand spanking new free one inside 3 years...

Had the casing off .. brushes look fine but for the sake of a few quid I might swap them anyway. Works perfectly today weirdly. Do these things have some kind of thermal protection? It was left in the sun yesterday and had quite a lot of use.

Had no idea these things even had one .. serviceable? I don't see them under common parts on the few spare sites that list this model or GMC equiv.

Maybe you're right, I don't know this particular tool. Some saws drive straight from the motor, others from a gearbox.
Its just like a mechanical noise that the saw is making, so check for tightness of the blade and any slackness in the mounting arbor. I'd very much doubt if spares are available anyway so I'd just use it until it fails, I think.

It was very strange ... it was the motor itself pulsing/struggling. If I gave the bade a pre-spin (no brake on this one!) then it helped it get going. Totally felt like something electrical. As you say, (ab)use until it dies I think.

You can have pole that's burnt out so half of the motor doesn't get excited. The motor jolts as the pole by chance comes in phase, but that's it.

LIKE three phase induction motor with a failed fuse on only one phase - the motor will run (albeit with higher current on those phases), but it will not start.

most iff not all saws have a drive to not have a drive will mean half the motor plus will encroach on the cutting capacity so they are offset so the motor is no lower than the blade securing bolt or washer
even 1to 1ratio will tend to have gear or belt to increase the cutting capacity

Definitely a motor winding issue if spinning the blade helps it to start.
Not very keen on that idea though
