Thinking about it Hugh... It would be useful if there was a forum indicator on profiles/screen names that showed if the poster is a tradesman or DIYer!

Not all tradesmen are professional in the way they conduct their business and some DIYers are professional and competant in the way they carry out their DIY work.

Stating that Peter Piper is a trading plumber gives no indication as to Mr Piper's ethics, abilities and competance in his work and business practises.

( The Peter Piper in this posting is ficticious )

 well it can be stated that anyone in the CC forum is gas safe registered or has been gas safe registered (retired) & afaik or am aware very few if any one in there are using that forum in order to obtain work /advertise for work

So I do not see that ethics ect come into it ??

What happens in the Combustion Chamber sub forum is of no interest or value to the DIYers

There might be unethical "professionals" in other trades who, give ( dubious ) advice to DIYers

And your actual point being?

I think it would be a great idea, those that can prove qualifications in a particular area have markers to that affect.

You'd hate it though BG, would you really want everyone to see that the advice you give comes from no actual qualification?

Regardless of what you have done in one house or have been to be inside advice, your tales would become even less valuable. Some would say it would make you in negative equity!

Bring it on I say. Tags for the qualified in their fields, administration tagged and moderators tagged.

A level playing field for all that would only, and could only, benefit this forum.

We'll done Bernard. For once I salute you and hope this carries forward. You have my vote!

Really? Pray do tell? Does it involve fairy liquid (other detergents are available) to find gas leaks? The rotters!

Tell me who that could be Bernard and I will find them!

If they are looking for ransom, We can tell you We don't have money. But what We do have are a very particular set of skills; skills We have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make Us a nightmare for people like them. If they apologise now, that'll be the end of it.

...or you could do what Joe90 used to do.

Read comments and advice from proper tradesmen and DIYers alike then plagiarise for his own post count. Sometimes he would use stuff that was correct and useful, other times he would plagiarise stuff that was just plain wrong.

Why are there five Gas Safe registered people against this idea?
Why do they resort to abuse for their argument?
Why have some comments been deleted that were not abusive?

Regardless of what you have done in one house

I have the experience and knowledge gained from building an entire house as a DIY project. That included all the plumbing ( legal gas work ) electrics and drainage. The only contracted out work was the brick chimney and the fixing of battens and slates.

I am now renovating this cottage. Some of the work is being contracted out because (a) I can afford to and (b) I am not as young as I was but it still hands on in all aspects of the planning and detailing of the work.

Hence I have no problem with people knowing I have no paper qualifications relevent to general DIY work. If having no paper qualifications bothered me that much and having the qualification was of value to me then I would try and get the qualification. But how much worth has that qualification ?

How many times have the time served trademen on this forum commented on the poor knowledge and ability of those "qualified people" who took a short course in college or evening classes and then passed a multiple choice exam paper. They are "qualified in the trade" but lack any actual experience of working in the trade.

.
Some would say it would make you in negative equity!

Again I have no problem with that. I am offering my opinion for the DIYer to consider it. I am not instructing the DIYer to do something.
