The BING 'virus'

I use Windows 10 and Chrome is my browser.
Whenever I open a link, an extra tab miraculously appears in Chrome. Yes, you guessed it, Bing.

I have followed every trick I can find on the internet and just can't get rid of it. I think Microsoft has a nerve to impose this on us and prevent us from doing anything about it. No good complaining to Microsoft, of course, not that I have even bothered to try.

Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone found a solution? I'm hoping that some enterprising individual out there has developed some software to overcome this intrusion, because Microsoft certainly won't!

I've tried the several things suggested in that forum link to no effect, I'm afraid. I believe that Bing is 'provided' (whether we like it or not) by Microsoft with Windows. A step towards their taking over our computers, I presume.

Can you disable it via Chrome settings (three little dots top right) then the "Search" settings, then "Manage Search Settings" and delete it.

I had issues with both Edge (replacement for Explorer) and Bing, so I have stopped using Explorer and have set Chrome as the browser to open everything and banished Bing (which I find complete tosh) to the ether.

Oh yes. I removed Bing from the list under 'Manage Search Engines'. It has made no difference.

Yes. Chrome is my default browser. However, I'm afraid that I have not managed to achieve the same success that you had!

At the moment, I just click to remove the Bing tab (in Chrome) whenever it appears, as I have absolutely no intention of using it, so it is really nothing more than an annoying inconvenience. What annoys me most, though, is that the producers of Bing seem to think that they can take control of my computer and will not allow me to remove the thing. I can't think of any other type of software which thinks it has the right to do that.

Ever tried to successfully merge text and images in Word without it doing something odd and usually infuriating?

Or is it just me?

I have tried to repIicate the issue on my PC but without luck.

OK. Well, it sounds like this happens with some systems and not others. As I said, it could be much worse as this is just a minor inconvenience, although annoying.

The most private search engine (allegedly) 'Startpage'. www.startpage.com
Most browsers allow several search engines with one set as 'default'.
Firefox has a separate search box alongside the address bar (which also doubles as a search box), the dedicated search box offers me words similar to my entered search, below these there are click-able icons for several search engines plus e-bay - Amazon too.
I think you need to investigate your start up tabs etc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just had a look at my tabs settings and found a new one on the list. Something to do with Toshiba (the make of my laptop). Strangely, it doesn't open when I start Chrome, but perhaps that's something to do with the Bing tab that keeps opening. Anyway, I've just removed it from the list, so we'll see.

Well, four hours on and no sight of a Bing tab appearing, so I assume it was the 'Toshiba' tab (which never appeared, despite being on the list!) that was responsible for the Bing tab appearing every so often.

I always use firefox browser find chrome to be crap.
Torbrowser for access to those sites your provider blocks.

I used to use Firefox, but found problems with my new Windows 10 laptop, so moved to Chrome. I find Chrome very good and reliable (now that I solved that little problem I mentioned).
Of course, there have been updates to both Firefox and Windows 10 since, so it is possible that Firefox may be just as good now. Still, I'm finding Chrome perfectly good enough now, so why change?

I haven't had any problems with blocked sites, either. Of course, I suppose it depends on what sort of sites you visit!
