Please someone help.
First post so firstly a big hello...... a friend recommended this forum so be gentle with me. ... lol

I was given a hive as a present and it on the face of it seems very simple to fit.

Could someone please tell me what wire is the common (or even better what wire goes where)

A sparky has offered to come over and tel me but wants 25 quid just to tell me.
I'll happily donate that amount to help for heroes if anyone can tell me (I'm ex army lol)

My boiler currently has the wireless ideal unit fitted which I've taken pics of and the chocolate box in the boiler is marked with what connection is what. But it's not worded the same as the hive (again pic below)

So please what wire goes where and do you I remove all the wire going into the chocolate box (on the bottom)

Also can I pick up my live and neutral feed straight from the boiler.

You've got a boiler with OpenTherm capability and you want to fit an on/off control to it? Seems unfortunate not to use the OpenTherm capability, which will improve efficiency. Would the person who gave you Hive as a present be offended if you exchanged it for something better?

The Hive is straight forward. First, it requires a permanent L & N usually from the same terminals as the boiler permanent L & N

The two switching wires go to the Hive Common (1), and Heating On (3). The problem is working out which terminals they are on your boiler. Unfortunately, I don't recognise it and you don't specify the model so I can't look for circuit diagrams on line to advise. I would have expected it to be the 'room stat / timer in and out' terminals and that there would presently be a link between them, but I can't see a link so.... maybe not. Perhaps someone will be along shortly who will recognise it.

The final hurdle will be to remove the existing wireless receiver from the equation, so that the Hive can take full control of the functions that it does now. This can be tricky with some built in devices.

I don't know what an openthem thing is our does

What's better than this as no I can swap it

Sorry. It's an ideal vogue

OP

What's better than this as they won't mind if I swap it

What's the common wire then.
Thank you for helping

Common is the live side of the room stat from the boiler. (Room stat Out) Its the live that is witched to Terminal 3 and sends the signal back to the boiler (Room Stat In) telling it to fire.

Common (1) to Boiler Room stat Out
Heating On (3) to Boiler Room Stat In
Live to Boiler Live
Neutral to Boiler Nuetral

Make sure its earthed and all work done with power off!

Unplug the wirless receiver too Top right plug in your 3rd picture

It's a much more precise control protocol which keeps your house at a more even temperature and adapts to save on gas usage. Nest works on OpenTherm.

Thank you.
What about 2 on the hive (heating off)

So far I understand it to be
N to N
L to L
Common (1 on hive ) to room stat out
Heating on (3) to room stat in

The diagram on the hive box says I need
Permanent neutral (got that)
Permanent live (got that)
Common (now know that goes to stat out)
Heating off NC (haven't got this yet)
Heating on NO (room stat in)

So do I need the heating off NC thing ??

Thank you once again and I'll happily post the screen shot.... be worth it as the wife will stop nagging

Seriously. I really appreciate your help
