For larger glands I agree, but for 20/25, these save time. The serrated backside also makes tightening the glands a one spanner operation and IMO, they are far more secure.

... and, I would say, preferable (if not 'essential') when glanding onto a 'plastic' enclosure.

I have never really understood what the banjo was actually for, for many years pyro was used and it was never suggested to use a banjo.

I was thinking more of metal to metal,, when swa came out, I assume plastic stuff was rare.
Are you suggesting they are supplied with millions of glands, just in case you was terminating into plastic.
Surely thats the installers problem, same as if terminating pyro or metal conduit, etc.
The only reason I can think there for, is the fad of putting a fly lead on them to the earth bar, though again Im not sure where that derived from.

Certainly not essential. In a plastic enclosure you simply need to sandwich the banjo between two locknuts inside the enclosure so that there is metal to metal contact to avoid the plastic creeping and endangering the earth connection to the armour.

It's surely not a 'fad'. If the only connection to the armour is that via the contact between the gland and a metal enclosure, then one has to drill a hole somewhere in the enclose to bolt on a solder tag or eyelet (just a smaller version of the banjo, really!) to establish a connection from armour to the 'earth bar'. Why drill a second hole to attach a 'mini banjo' when one can use the hole drilled (or punched, or knocked out) for the gland and a full-sized banjo??

When glanding onto a plastic enclosure (admittedly probably uncommon in the early days) one obviously has to use either a banjo or equivalent.

Well, yes, that is a way of functionally emulating a Piranhna (and the only way before the days of Piranhnas).

as part of an external swa cable gland set, there comes a copper washer with a tab sticking out, kinda shaped like a magnifying glass. Do they have a specific name? I could do with buying a few in a pack, without having to buy the rest of the gland too..
