Baxi BBU/fire removal - what to do with the flue?

Hi
I had my ancient Baxi backboiler replaced a while ago but at the time couldn't afford to sort replacing the fire front, so the whole lot was decommissioned and disconnected but left in situ so I didn't have a big hole in the wall.

We have decided not to replace the fire and are wanting to make more of a decorative feature out of the recess so will be tidying up the hole, plastering etc.

The only issue I can think of currently relates to the flue - what do you do with it? I have read tons online about fires and flues and there is conflicting advice - would rather not just cover it over as some suggest as a bit of ventilation would be good, but equally don't want soot and god knows what falling down all the time.

Any suggestions?

If you want ventilation just cover the top with plasterboard or ply and cut a vent in to match the flue.

Thanks Jeff - was wondering if I could just do something simple like that - with this house though it seems so far that every single job has been far more complex than you'd ever imagine - we'll see!

If you want to ventilate the brickwork of the chimney - which is advisable - you will have to have the old flue liner & cowl removed and a trickle ventilation pot installed on top.

If you you do what Jeff suggested with the liner in situ you'll just get ventilation passing up the liner.

As a half measure I would cut the liner off as far up as I could reach and then ventilate to space to include chimney and liner.

Not a full job but it would work.
