Popped into a newly built Lidl store and was really impressed with beauties. They looked to be about 1500mm deep and less than 250mm wide.

Impressive beams - certainly - but probably far more expensive than steel for what is really just another shed. The contrast between the warm, cosy timber and the industrial crinkly tin roof I find slightly odd.
These might have suited John Lewis better rather than Lidl.

It's called architecture tony. Similar to my local Sainsburys actually, I'll post a pic next time I'm in. Maybe we could all compare our local supermarkets.

It's all about the shopping experience.

I usually look on the shelves, not at the ceiling.
It's called architecture tony. Not everyone wants to live or shop in the Favelas. Or for the simpletons making what can sometimes be a depressing and tedious affair into something not quite so depressing and tedious by creating a nicer environment for which you do it it in. It also probably makes you spend a bit more.

I'd rather them use steel beams if it would mean reducing the price of the products.
I don't want a 'shopping experience' - I hate shopping.
