Hi all, Can anyone recommend a decent palm sander, corded or cordless. I was looking at the Ryobi One+ because I have a few Ryobi One+ tools but If there is a good alternative I'd take a look at it.

Dust extraction is important as it will be used internally quite a bit.

Festool have just come out with a range of new sanders that are 2in1 corded and cordless. And festool are well known for good dust extraction.

They are either corded or cordless afaik.

Silly money tools, unfortunately I'm not royalty nor a sponging politician so Festools is out, well unless I win the lottery tomorrow then I'll buy the whole range.

Using plug - it, will that then charge the battery pack?

Cordless eccentric sander ETSC 125 Li-Basic - £266.40 GBP.
I call that reasonable.

I mean most sanders on the market are decent but you said dust extraction is important; naturally festool would be a suggestion.

No, when plugged in the battery is completely removed. Shame they didn't think of that really.

If you want decent extraction, then you have a bleedin great box attached with the hose
So why cordless?

If you want decent extraction then surely a vacuum cleaner would be the way to go?

The problem with a lot of tool brands today is you have to buy into their system, so with Festools before you buy a tool you have to make a minimum financial investment of approx £300 in their dust extractor. the same goes for the rest like Bosch, Dewalt,, Makita, Milwaukee and Hitachi etc. If I was a young buck just starting out on my trade I'd consider investing but I'm the wrong side of 50 lol!

One of the best tools I've purchased of late is the Exakt Saw, the reason I bought it was because it is a great tool, reasonable price and it has a simple dust extractor adapter that fits perfectly into any vacuum hose, this enabled me to cut a bathroom full of travertine tiles with no dust flying about. Why other manufacturers can't do the same is beyond me but I'm sure with the advent of 3D printing it's very possible to cobble together a similar version for use on other tools, or just use DuckTape lol!

I think I'm going to stick with Ryobi and just buy their One+ Corded version as sanding isn't a short job and I think the batteries wouldn't last very long. I've been pleased with the other tools so far.

Thanks for the options.

Not strictly true. There is nothing intrinsically "special" about individual manufacturers dust extraction systems - they are pretty much interchangeable, so for example, I have Mafell, Metabo, Makita, deWalt, Bosch and, yes, Festool tools being served by a Metabo extrator (mine own) and a Hilti extractor (the firm's). The critical issue with trade use is the extraction standard, with Class L being suitable only for general extraction, vacuuming floors, etc, Class M being required for extracting wood dusts and other potentially harmful dusts (such as paint dusts, etc) and Class H being the preserve of the really nasty stuff like asbestos. As a tradesman using these, or having a tool with an on-board bag, is no longer optional - and in any case using the correct dust extractor is also good practice for your health. And that's coming from someone in his sixties who still sees the need to extract rather than end up with pneumoconiosis (which helped do for my old man).

Would be an interesting review to have wouldn't it, can you just plug other tools into any dust extractor, because in my experience they love to make their own fitments with their own pipe gauges so having a selection of tools and dust extractors and no cobbling together with ducktape would be an interesting review considering the importance of H&S.

Everything is pretty much standardised these days.
