Stove installation quote

Just thought I'd post this up here for a bit of amusement!

Recently had a quote to supply and install a multifuel stove.

I live in an end of terrace circa 1900 stone built cottage. Chimney is on the gable end. I'm ripping out my old inset stove and opening up the original fireplace/inglenook, so that's not in the quote. I need approx 5 metres of flexi liner grade 904. I live just south of Glasgow. So...........

Arada Ecoburn 5 Widescreen multifuel £800
Bespoke hearth. £300
Inglenook board and plaster work. £500
Wooden oak beam. £180
Flue liner system. £520
Installation and commissioning of stove £800
HETAS certification and registration of installation £400

So, a total of 3.5k but with a 200 quid discount. So 3.3k.

Think I'll pass on that thanks!

That was the indicator. Did you laugh incredulously in his face, or do a McEnroe (you cannot be serious), or as I suspect, okay, I'll have a chat with the missus, and we'll get back to you.

Way overcharging for the liner, way overcharging for the installation (it'll only take a day), and then wanting £400 for issung a certificate, almost wants you to ring HETAS, and let them know what sort of a crook they've trained.

Had a nice chap round today saying it'll only cost a days labour at 400 quid. I'm guessing it'll be 2 blokes. He also said it costs 55 quid for the HETAS registration, and that includes a co2 alarm.

Thanks Doggit, your reply was what I was hoping for......a bit of reassurance from someone who obviously knows their stuff.

Might even contact HETAS now you mention it!

Oh, and it was more like "I'll get back to you". Think my brain couldn't handle the mathematics of the vast sums!

£400 about right for a stove insulation, and as you say, it's a 2 man job. When you contact HETAS, ask them what the registration charges cost, as I think you're getting an expensive CO alarm (costs about £20 nowadays, even cheaper in Aldis when they have them.

Have you thought about doing this yourself. Post a picture of the opening if you want.

Excuse the gash picture as I've just taken it on my tablet. The red line is what I've just drawn with a marker. It represents where the original stone lintel is. It's roughly 5ft 5inch high.

Utter pig of a job taking this out. Boiler stove which has been built in well, but the flue was installed wrong.

Well it looks as though you've got a hearth of sorts, and if you can sort out that fireplace, then you can put in a better hearth. You can get a green oak sleeper for about £30, and that'll make your beam. Annd what's the inglenook board and plastering.

Original hearth laid in place of floor boards. 3ft from wall, 4ft wide. Unsure how far back it goes but I'll guess all the way. Tiling on top, then built up again for the stove to sit on.
