Thermostat not starting boiler

Hi,

Our house has two central heating zones: the living room which has a programmable thermostat, and the rest of the house that has a simple dial in the hall.

We have the heating on continuous and use the thermostats to turn it on and off.

I have notice that after turning up the dial in the hall the heating does not always start. (Sometimes there is a long delay before the boiler starts.)
Turning up the heat in the living room will cause the boiler to start promptly and all radiators to get warm, but then turning the living room down again will turn off the whole system.

What are the possible causes of this problem?

it is very difficult to diagnose an issue without knowing specifically what the system is, make models etc and what it contains, more info is needed. Lots of posters ask questions without supplying any relative info about the system.

At the moment though essentially you have 2 thermostats working against each other unless they are wired in series and there could be numerous reasons why it's not working properly. Time to get an experienced engineer in.

It turned out that the motorised valve had partially failed. Although it was still turning, the lever was not making contact with the microswitch and therefore not starting the boiler. It failed completely on 24th December. Followed by the other one on 27th.
