Recommend travelling at or below the speed limit then you will not need a reliable speed camera detector.
By the time a vehicle mounted laser detector detects the speed measuring device the vehicles speed will have been measured.
And short of hiding your number plate ( or changing your number plate between cameras ) nothing defeats the average speed camera system.

Has the trick of changing lanes in between cameras been fixed?

I am told that never worked. In the first multi-lane systems the data ( number plate and time ) from each entry camera was compared to data from each and every exit camera.
Recommend driving at 200+mph past every speed camera to ensure you remain undetected. Beats them every time.

IIRC a few years back the Police acknowledged that the system in either Nottingham or Northampton (can't recall which, but it was a main mulit lane carriageway) did not register vehicles that changed lanes. It was a system in use elsewhere in the country too.
And what about us without the flash cars?

Did you pick up the news today where some plonker in the police (name of Bagham) reckons there should be no leeway, and you get done if even 1 mile above the speed limit. Now that might have been credible if he didn't go on to say that those just over the speed limit could go on speed awareness courses (often run by the police themselves so they get the revenue) and those markedly over automatically get points and a fine.
Maybe trying to beat the speed cameras isn't the best course of action.

They weren't type approved for multi-lane detection initially, so it wasn't that they couldn't work out the avg speed it was that they could not be used as primary evidence.
speed cameras are a money making scam. Fortunately the pyramid funded "speed camera partnership" are history, but we have their legacy of cameras placed in the safest places to exceed the limit.

Didn't know "the partnerships" had gone - I pulled a blinder one night recently - Going through a local speed trap the opposite way, I thought I would set the thing off, and there happened to be 2 cars in the camera/lines @ the time. Poor buggers were probably in the limit. ( as I am usually )

they eventually figured out that they'd created a monster. back in those days. camera partnerships were wasting as much money as they possibly could to avoid being seen as a huge profit making racket.
It was a perfect storm of daftness between 1999 and 2002 - speed limit rules were changed moving away from the 85th percentile of vehicle speed to the avg. speed (which as anyone with half a brain will appreciate will see the limit spiraling down every time it is reviewed), combined with speeding fines, funding cameras. we saw a tripling of speeding fines.
One thing I would say about new labour - they listened to bad PR. They canned the program in 2007 (decision in 2005). The torries simply haven't funded it, which keeps it in check.
The thing that is really interesting - well road deaths stayed pretty much the same '97 - 03' when enforcement tripled, and nearly halved after they cancelled the project.
Yep - recession is the best cure for road fatalities.

Truth be told when I got copped by an unmarked BMW and received 3 of the finest, the bump in motor insurance premium for years after slowed me right down. It's just not worth the bother for sake of going out the house a bit earlier.
A bit more leeway I feel should and is given on motorways. Once watching a police car program, you know the ones, the bobby said he as a rule of thumb allows 10%+3 given the driver isn't being a complete bellend.
I think that's perhaps why there wasn't an increase to 80, it gives the police an excuse to pull you if slightly over and they suspect you're not being cautious enough. Of course if it ever did hit 80 everyone would then take another inch and do 90.
