The wording on my ''conditions'' letter from building control state this:

''Heat producing appliances to be installed by HETAS competent person OR alternatively the work carried out by a person technically competent to undertake the installation and complete the Building Control Approved Document J checklist''

I'm puzzled by this statement, does this mean that the job can be completed and certified without a HETAS person on site? If so what would ''technically competent'' mean exactly? My building inspector keeps deflecting when I bring this one up.

the trouble you have is if its not installed correctly it wont be passed by building control at your expense
at least with a hetas engineer you know you will get a certificate to say it passes with no need for building control to check it

Thanks, that's pretty much confirmed what the inspector said. The council would get their HETAS man out and charge me.

I know it's all good as I've spend a grand on the twin wall stainless flue and brackets and conformed with the regs. So, any HETAS guys around the Kendal area of Cumbria who want a bit of work that doesn't involve dirty hands?
