American sockets in the UK... ever?

Yeah, I just think it is a socket, not any one in particular.

I have even seen sockets drawn in kiddies books where the flex comes out of the top of the plug.
I posted once a picture of a real plug with the flex exiting the top of a butchered plug.

Those are the special plugs for when socket mounted too low? I have also seen sockets mounted upside down where back box was too low, however although nothing wrong with socket, it means plugs are not IP4X

Does, strictly speaking, the requirement for the upper surface of an enclosure to be IP4X actually apply to plugs, I wonder? That regulation is part of BS7671 and I would have thought that plugs were outside its scope. I'm also not convinced, with a good few plug designs, that it would necessarily not be "IP4X" (when inverted), anyway.

However, BS1363 may have something to say about this - I have no idea.

The authors name is English, but who illustrated it? I reckon you may find it was illustrated differently in different countries.

Might be the publisher. The dimensions and addition of a switch has it primed for a possible re-draw from an original.

Or it's just a generic-unspecific-socket-type-thing in a book aimed at children who aren't going to obsess about the minutiae of its design because it really doesn't matter.
