Minimum bedroom size for single bed

Hi all

I'm considering either converting a large 'cupboard' to a single bedroom (where my boiler et all used to sit), or moving the bathroom into the cupboard and convert the bathroom into a room. They are on the 1st floor. House is a detached normal type dwelling

I've been searching, and can find articles on HMO's, but struggling to find recommended/minimum sizes for a 'normal' house.

I wondered if anyone has the knowledge to help?

In addition, the Housing Act 1985 specifies an effective minimum room size to be 6.51m² (70ft²). Statutory overcrowding may result if a person causes or permits an adult to sleep in a room with a floor area of less than this.

That's about 8 foot square.

For houses of multiple occupancy (pack em in, sell em expensive!), that figure is the law for one person.

Housing Act is for social housing not private.

There is no minimum size for private housing if you convert. I understand that London planning authorities have room standards for extensions and new build and it will be in the various local councils planning policy guides, but these only apply if planning permission applies. These are based on the old Parker Morris standards, which are often cited as minimum sizes regardless.

Thankyou both for that - I saw about the Housing Act 1985 for HMO's and there was a court case of someone renting out over 50 people to a 4 bedroom house(!!)

Thankfully I'm not in London - I'm in the Shire's but will read the Parker Morris standards

I thought I was told not read a while back by a visiting uncle that the headheight had to be over 2metres for more than 50percent of the room to qualify as a bedroom. I might well be wrong or should I say my uncle might be wrong but thought id throw that into the cooking pot.

I wouldn't go any smaller than a box room 1.9x1.9 there only good for small children
