fruit flies perhaps
you find them where you find decaying fruit and plant material
if you have say carrots or potatoes in a room for example check for any rotten
any flies will die soon after food removed
saucer off cider can mop up the last few as they get desperate for food they drown in the cider

i found this out by accident
had a potato that had gone mushy and covered in fruit flies many flying off when you remove it so flies everywhere
roll on two days later left about 12mm in my cider tankard by mistake for two days and full off dead flies

Flies don’t nest , either fruit flies or possible salt flies ( attracted to dried urine deposits).
Op said they were flies.
If the flies are really small, 99% certain they are [were ] fruit flies. I may be wrong but there seems to be a load more of them this year?
When I bring in the tomatoes from the green house and i have missed a tomato that has split [over ripe] inside about 2 hours the bowl will have a tiny fruit fly hovering around it.
I even have the little sods in the back of the car? A banana fell out of a bag, ended up on the floor in the rear of the car, I found the dead banana three days later, now i have a hoard of fruit flies in the car???
As for migrating wood worm, I think not, on a couple of occasions i have looked for them with a saw, bradall and chisel into a really badly chewed bit of timber, no sign at all of wriggling worms at all, I was told the worms stay in the wood they are destroying until they emerge as moths, this can take up to several years, they then fly around for about a day, lay more eggs and that is the end of the moth, it is said that the moth stage is very, very difficult to observe?

woodworms migrate from flightholes around now an hit the windows lookin for light.
they have wings to fly from ther flight holes.

We often get those masses of small dead flies on our windowsill on hot, sunny days. Have been getting them for 15 years or more. Not a hint of a woodworm flight hole anywhere in our solid floor and I’ve just checked all our wooden furniture and....nothing.
