Repairing squeaking floor boards...

We had a new central heating system installed last year, but ever since the floor boards have squeaked upstairs where they were lifted to install the new piping.

To lift the boards the gas engineer cut through the tongue and groove with a circular saw and then prised them up with a crowbar.

To cure the squeaking is it just a case that they need to be fixed down more securely perhaps using screws rather than nails? Or is the fact they have no tongue and groove a factor too?

Before lifting the carpets and starting the job I just wondered if you could give me some tips?

Fixing them down with screws is much better to cure the squeaking but check also that the underside of the floorboards is not in contact with any pipes.

The one that's "forgotten" to screw down and squeaking is always the one with the pipe under. Ask any new diyer
