Best Paint for Wooden Fascia Board

I have just had my garage repaired, which also included the fitting of new fascia boards.

These boards are made from external plywood.

I am keen to paint them asap but need some advice here first.

What is the best paint for the job ?

I will be painting a final coat a burgundy colour, so I guess I need a dark undercoat too.

I actually have some Leyland grey undercoat, but I think it is a water based paint ... will that work or do I need an oil based undercoat to go with an oil based gloss.

Personally I would use the Dulux Trade Weathershield oil based paints.

The primer/preservative is a blue liquid.

The premixed grey DTW undercoat may be a bit too dark though. You could always ask your local decorators' merchant to tint the undercoat to match the burgundy gloss.

At this time of the year, apply the gloss as early in the day as possible. If you do it too late, the evening dew will make the sheen blush.

You can add some terebene to speed up the curing time. And on particularly cold days (when the temperature thickens the paint) you can add Owatrol oil.

Exterior plywood is no good for exterior use.

Marine ply is the only plywood that lasts outside.

I've found exterior plywood, even if painted with the best Dulux Trade oil-based primer, undercoat and gloss, tends to split and curl up in a very short time.

Hopefully this won't happen to you.

Be sure to fill any little holes you may have at the edges of the boards, as these can let in moisture.

When I built my garage I used bog standard WBP ply for the fascias and sofits. 15 years later they are fine. Funnily enough so is my back gate which is a sheet of ply. It was supposed to be temporary (15 years ago).

I guess that I am lucky that the pre 2010 (VOC compliance) Dulux Weathershield paint was so good.

That's good to know, maybe my experiences were down to bad luck.

Or maybe interior ply labelled exterior.

I may have to give exterior ply another chance.

Marine ply is expensive and not always easy to get.
