Regarding the floor insulation: my Building Inspector told me to install 80mm celotex between our 95mm joists and leave the extra 15mm gap at the top.

He didn’t mention anything about vapour barriers or taping the gaps. He even advised to not fill the gaps along the walls between the first joists (seen many comments about filling this gap insulation to prevent drafts).

Any advice?

If cold air gets in from outside above the insulation, then this will make it pretty pointless!
So far my best result has been from putting solid board down with rockwool on top.

We have approx 50mm gap between the outer walls and the parallel joists.

How did you get your gap filled? Did you just stuff it with rockwool?

I have gaps on the edge of the room, but air from there cannot get into or above the insulation. On the external walls I also put in insulation boards, so there is no cold bridge once it was all in.

Last year I did leave a bit of floor in the bay without insulation. It looked like this:


wasnt the best job, but the idea being that no air from outside can get into the insulated area. All taped and then wool placed above the boards. Not sure if this is anything like you are doing though!

Firstly, thanks for all the kind words!

Best get this thread back on track with an update

I’ve gained a huge amount of experience over these past weeks/months since the last update and for the most part it’s been a lot of fun. It’s extremely rewarding when people comment on the quality of the finish throughout and knowing it hasn’t cost me a penny in labour outside of the skimming, major plumbing and electrics.

Here is another update bringing us to early December 2018.

Skirting and Architrave completed/painted
Oak and Glass balustrade fitted
Kitchen fitted
All upstairs doors Oiled, Hinged and ready to be fitted (awaiting carpet)
All downstairs doors Oiled, Hinged
Blinds installed throughout
All radiators fitted, UFH connected
3 x wired Nest protect installed (Kitchen/Hall/Landing)
3 x Nest Thermostats installed (Kitchen/Front Room/Front Bedroom)
Rear wooden outbuilding/toilet taken down.
24 Cat6 ethernet drops ran throughout
Satellite Dish installed with 6 Coax runs
Dolby Atmos surround sound wiring installed in Front Room + BluCube ceiling speakers installed.

Not at all, I got it from Stairbox.com, they have an online glass balustrade builder where you pop in your measurements and it gives you a price based on your selections.

Came out at around £750 delivered which I felt was very fair (fitted it myself though), highly recommend them.

I see you've put the range cooker in the chimney. Have you got your extraction up inside? We're planning to do the same at our place and have been looking at telescopic hoods that recess into the chimney.
