Hi All

I need to remove the first few rows of roof tiles on the garage roof in order to replace a rotten soffit. ( I need to remove the fascia, soffit apply some wood treatment then refit everything)

from what i understand, i need to push up the second row of tiles in order to remove the first row.

the end tile looks like its bedded into some mortar like so......

how do i go about moving these tiles given the mortar in between them?

Cheers

You should be able to leave the tiles in on the verge.
On those small tiles it could be 3, 4 ,5 th row before you
find a row you can push up to expose the nails on the ones below. a small flat pry bar is a good tool to remove the nails, plus a few off cuts of batons to hold the tiles up.

as above leave the verge as is , it should stay . But pushing a tile up will not expose the nail on plain tiles.
Either, they all might stay in and just hang down a bit while you replace the soffit/fascia and push them back in line when you fit the new timber.
Or slip out the third course of tiles and eave course. Dont start at the verge , work back to it.

Thanks.
If they stay in as mentioned how do you manage to remove the fascia?
Cheers

The fascia is normally nailed to the rafter feet so you will have to cut those nails, I would use my reciprocating saw.
If you are removing the tiles at the bottom then you could hit the back of the fascia with a hammer.

If it's just the soffit that needs renewing - leave the fascia and tiles in situ and cut out the soffit. Holesaw, jigsaw, hammer+chisel.;)

Now you mention it, it is only a short section of the soffit that needs replacing...

I think it should just be the section on the side of the horizontal line with the hole in it...will have to open it up to confirm

In terms of fitting a replacment how does the soffit mornally get fixed to the brick work.and to the existing (good section of soffit)

Also whats the best material to use? Something like waterproof ply?

WBP would be OK. Quite often the soffit lays on top of the finish brickwork, or maybe to a batten fixed to the wall. There could be a groove in the facia that the soffit fits. Open up the centre and you'll see - various battens can be used to secure the new part;)

Soffits By design ie. sheltered don't rot unless you have a leak so you need to fix that at the same time.

Correct, i think ive identified the source of the leak already so once ive fixed that and removed the bad material. Ill apply a wood treatment to the sound timber before replacing the soffit
