If there were a metal box there (for the socket), one has to wonder why an electrician would remove it when the socket was removed, with the intention (one assumes) of substituting a blank plate (which would simply be making 'unnecessary work'!)!

Putting it in the wrong place was also unnecessary , as was the bull about getting it damp .

As I said, on the basis of the photo, your guess is as good as mine - but it would have been quite a struggle to install a socket, with two cables in a 16mm box.

Well, to be fair, if it's 'dot and dab', I don't think that any builder would leave enough space for a decent depth of back box.

All true, but as I presume you realise, my point was that one can't read too much into "electricians (nearly always) use back boxes" when we are faced with am electrician who apparently took one out inappropriately!

"Within Regs" and doing a decent job aren't necessarily the same thing. A regulation is the minimum standard that must be met, whereas a decent job not only meets the minimum standard but also adds a bit of class (pride or skill, call it what you want) by the 'perpetrator'

I'm still confused. No-one is denying or disputing that there is plasterboard in front of the blocks (that's what the photo shows). What is your point?

Maybe, just maybe he didn't have 2 metal boxes...

and used the original backbox to mount the socket in the new location.

And even further, maybe he didn't have one backbox, afterall OP did have to go to Screwfix for items that a self respecting electrician would have 'on the van'.
