Ok. So that means picture 2 is correct.

Does the kitchen light work properly now?
If so, that then, assuming everything is as it normally is, means that the hall light is wired wrongly.

Yes it is working perfectly now!
I was editing my previous post when yours came through.

Thank you for your concern, warnings and advice.

Tomorrow I will sort the other light.
Decided it (or I) couldn't wait, did it after a cuppa, no problems at all.
