Facial Recognition

That's an interesting point. I have been in London with my wife several times in the last few years where we have been caught up in political demonstrations that we were not participating in. I wonder if they were using facial recognition then.

Our photos and information has been logged via passport control at Heathrow on several occasions so I guess they are able to link that information to the facial recognition database.

The vast majority are innocent bystanders whose data is hooveered up. What if you look similar to a wanted criminal - instead of Policing being active and looking into leads they can be passive and react to when a match is made. All you have to do is tweak the algorithm and you can get more matches.

I couldn't pass through passport control with my glasses on a few weeks ago and had to remove them and replace them to get through. I did wonder if they were wanting a with and without photo as it had not happened before.

Is your passport pic with your glasses on? Sometimes it can disrupt the FR system. All it does, is scan your face and then record a series of reference points of your face which is then converted into a long string of data, then you do a search you search for matches against this string.

Ah, you got me there I will have to check.

I have been reading a bit about python and facial recognition so know a little of how it works.

Just checked and the photo is without glasses. But as said it was the first time I couldn't get through while wearing them.

It's called 'association'...

The same happens with ANPR...

Tough luck if you happen to be driving in close proximity to a known target!

The main problem with a flawed technology is that it throws up so many false positives that it means plod is dealing with an ever increasing size of haystack when looking for that needle!

Nope...

"Do not wear sunglasses or tinted glasses. You can wear other glasses if you need to, but your eyes must be visible without any glare or reflection."

My glasses are varifocal that have reaction lenses, anti glare, anti scratch and a prism to boot. Perhaps the lighting caused the lenses to be too dark.

I cannot agree with that, at least where they are looking for a particular suspect. Imagine they are looking for a male, without the FR the police have to be on constant alert watching 50 % of the population. The FR will cut that need to watch down to infinitesimally small numbers who match and deserve extra attention. Rather like an Internet search engine, imagine your having to manually read every page on every web site in the world - a search engine does the hard work, you then just have a relatively few pages to look at your self, to confirm what you were looking for.
