Hi all...

I have an IKEA Magnesium light fitting with 5 MR16 12v 20W bulbs in and have just bought GU5.3 85-240V 5w smart bulbs for it.
Bulb instructions say.. For 12v systems remove the transformer.
Can i just remove the transformer?
Will the extra volts overload/melt/burn the bulb track?

Many thanks

Kev. better to start your own topic.

It’s confusing if you unearth a 5 year old thread. Personally I cannot remember that far back and I CBA to read it all and find that your query doesn’t have anything to do with the old topic.

When you do start your own topic.
please link to the item. Just saying “this light fitting” is no help if we can’t see it.

ok gripe over. I’ll look out for your new topic.

But more important is the construction of the IKEA Magnesium light fitting suitable for use at 230 volts ? The wiring, insulation and components inside the fitting may only be safe at 12 volts and no Earth. Insulation breakdown and lack of Earthing could result in the exposed metal of the fitting becoming Live

I see you can buy them as 240 volt version, but what happens when the bulb blows and some one fits a 12 volt version?

I tried to find the lamp on Ikea web site but not shown, so I picked a random ceiling lamp and there is nothing to say what voltage it is unless the bulb and lamp are combined, however it would worry me to fit a 230 volt G5.3 lamp in a fitting designed for extra low voltage.

So yes it likely will "work" by removing the power supply, but the real question is will it work safely.

Clearly this

is not safe, so how do you know? I would say send them back, not worth the risk.

That's what I was after.
If it would be safe to use after the transformer is removed.

Indeed, I have encountered 12V fittings - all metal chandelier type with several 'bulbs' - which actually use the metal of the fitting as the negative conductor.
