I really need to favourite this site or make it my homepage.

I'm shocking at DIY. Everyone I ask for advice either gives one word answers or isnt really interested in helping / has the time to help.

Anyways, the mrs who expects me to naturally be a dab hand wants me to put a mirror up in the front room... sure i said...

So, after hours of stress and youtube videos that all tell different stories.. I bought some rawl plugs, turned out I got self drive ones.. started self driving and suddenly hit brick... asked for advice and was told to just drill a small pilot hole and i could still use the plug and screw no issue.

Used a mates drill and it didnt even budge the brick... bought my own drill (wanted one since I moved in) and shifted the brick but it did it uneven for some reason so the rawl plug goes in but not perfectly flush, it's near as dammit to be fair but definitely not shrunk into the wall.

I screwed the screw in but possibly too tight as it started turning the rawl plug with it.... should this happen or should it be immovable.

How far in should i put the screws in to hold the mirror on.

Is everything I've done okay so far other than being a bit pathetic?

I took it out and put another rawl plug in but didnt screw ridiculously tight and it seems solid

Shouldn't have made a difference, but hey ho, if it worked.

There are many questions.

What drill have you got.
What you drilling into
What drill bit have you got
What size drill bit did you use
What size plug did you use
What type and size of screw did you use.
Did you measure properly
Use a spirit level.

Questions questions.

diall 14 x 32 self drive - the one that came with it

Plaster board that was clearly very thin that became brick

Oh dear :( That's a plasterboard cavity self tapping plug.
Yeah, it self drives into the plasterboard, that's what I said. But then someone told me now I had hit brick that I can just drill a small pilot hole and still use it. Is that not the case then?
