Hi.

I discovered there are rats in the garden attracted by my compost bin. They are smart.

I am thinking of going beyond traps and poisons. My electricity is 240 V. I consider using suitable size pieces of board with mesh wire on top. Placing those about 50 mm apart. Then connect positive to one mesh, and negative to the other.

Hopefully it work this way. Placing the bait, say on the positive side, a rat will reach for the bait whilst still on the negative side, and complete the circuit.

The contraption will be well protected from the weather.

Any alternative, or better suggestions, most welcome.

Thank you.

The rats will sense the eletricity and avoid the area. ( they can chew through Live cable until they are a milli-metre or so from the Live copper when they stop )

They don't necessarily stop, even then, but there was no corpse in the vicinity, so the perpetrator of this must have survived! ...

Pellet gun is more fun.
In my previous house i used to lie on the extension flat roof and shoot them.
Eventually i exterminated them.
Must have killed 250 in a couple of months.
What i noticed is that the first lot were much bigger than the last.

Yep an air rifle is the most humane way, assuming you don't "wing" them. Rats haven't developed immunity to having their brains blown out, and probably never will.

@op Forget about your plan and never think of it again.

That reminded me of many years ago. All the lights and sockets had stopped working in a restaurant kitchen. I found that rats running up and down the cable run in the loft had worn away the insulation so all that was left was a mess a bare copper. Naturally it was in a difficult place to reach. I was lying face down sorting out connections and felt a few rats run over my back. I kept working, then I heard creaking and felt some movement in the joists under me, I wondered what was coming, I think I froze in terror expecting the biggest rat ever to attack me. Then the restaurant owner asked me how long I would be as he wanted to start cooking. He had come into the loft and it was him crawling towards me that I felt. I finished the job and politely declined the offer of a free meal from that rat infested kitchen.
