Hi there,
I need to seal a leak in the top of my shower waste trap. I think the washer has gone or the trap has been installed wonky (many moons ago by a numpty).
The far side of the trap is impossible to reach by touch.
The trap is completely wedged in every side by wood or joists so unable to remove and replace, even from the ceiling below.
Could I use plumbers mait to seal what I can reach and maybe a foam or spray with an attached hose type thing to seal the far side, the side I can’t reach? Thanks

Sorry but in a word no.:(
You will never seal that joint from outside, it needs to be split and the seal/ misalignment sorted out. A pair of grips (water pump pliers) might just be able to turn that nut, this sort of tool they come in various sizes so measure the size of the nut.

You want to find a pair that just fit but are not too long for swinging in the cupboard. around 10" handles are about right normally.
If you cannot get it to line up there are flexible pipes that might get you out of trouble, a new seal would be my first try , you can use silicone like Fernox LSX but it can be a problem with the lubrication allowing the seal to "squidge" out of it's seat.
Depends on your DIY skills otherwise it's a job for a plumber listen to him doing it carefully you will learn a whole new set of words, jobs like that are a total pain.;)

... thought as much.... thank you footprints for your honest reply .... :(

As above, give us a pic of the drain rose in the shower tray.
There may be a screw in the middle, sometimes the whole thing screws into the trap.
John :)

As per my posts last week on your other thread, remove the shower rose and this should allow you to reposition the horizontal pipe. You can then clean up and check the compression but and then resealable the trap to the tray.

They got it in there with the tray in position so will be possible. As per above post a picture of the shower rose

Thank you everyone for your advice.
I tried to move the waste outlet before (is that the rose) but couldn’t move it and the plumber wasn’t keen on dismantling it. Nor is he keen on replacing the trap from the ceiling below as his builders have replastered my ceilings. He said the whole shower tray would need to come out which is a big job. Whilst I was at work, the plumber has sealed the hair trap into the waste outlet, perhaps hoping it would solve the issue, but it hasn’t :(

With the waste @ the front of the tray like it is .... I have to agree with Dan.

It'll be a lot easier to cut a hole in the ceiling below than to pull the tray out and refit it...
EDIT..looking at the latest pic, yes that is excellent access. One wonders whether the joist is putting pressure on the trap/pipework and thats what has caused the failure...i've got a tray to go in a similar location, one key selection requirement was where was the waste hole (for exactly that reason).
