An anyone help me with a laptop problem?

I’ve had this problem since I’ve had it. Probably 5 or 6 years now. I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop running windows 10. I literally only use it for my account spreadsheets.
When I shut it down in the normal way (windows button >power button > shut down) it all goes off then I close the lid. Whenever I open the lid, it boots up without me touching anything. However, if I don’t use it for some time (months usually) it completely drains the battery and I have to enter the time, day and date. Obviously something is still running but what?

I'm not familiar with that laptop, but shutting down most laptops merely puts them into a deep sleep mode, from which they can be woken by pressing the power button. So at least the button monitoring function must still be running.

Go to the start button, click on the cog (settings) click on systems, select Power and sleep on the left hand column, scroll down to and click on additional power settings.
You will get a panel on the left you can select choose what closing the lid does as well as other operations. You should be able to sort it out from those options.
Your Coms battery is knackered that's why your computer forgets the time. Google cmos battery laptop Toshiba satellite and see if your model is an easy change, some are just like changing a watch battery others mean dismantling your computer into a box full of bits!
And yes the main batteries are s**t mine runs flat if left a few weeks and even fully charged an hour or so is all I get.

Thanks. Have set it up to shut down both on battery and mains now when I close the lid. Googled for a cmos battery on eBay but not sure what model I have. In any case, there’s no little doors on the casing so it may need taking to pieces. I’ll see how I get on with it now I have changed the settings. Currently updating the windows at the moment. Thanks again.

Yes I do, as a rule and always shut down using LH corner start button, power button logo, then select shut down. I only ever use the mechanical on button on the keyboard to turn off if the system freezes.

hibernate is a great option rather than "shut down" and in power options you can set this when "i close the lid" usually.
Are the accounts very personal with account numbers etc? If so, does the laptop have a BIOS/startup PIN or password? Placing the laptop into shutdown or hibernate, means that this PIN/password is always required, so if your laptop gets stolen, your information should be safe.

Yes, but that made no difference.
