Removing satellite and ethernet cable

The previous owners of my house had a real ramshackle approach to having cabling in the house. In the bedroom, there's a satellite cable just sticking up out of the floor and in the living room there's a bright purple ethernet cable coming up out of the carpet.

I have genuinely no idea where either cable exists and after giving both of them a tug, it's quite clear that removing them will involve having to pull up the carpet and then relay the edges.

Is it safe to just cut the cables as close to the edge as possible and then just stuff the end under the carpet?

It's not unsafe, but removing them and putting the carpet edge back really isn't a big deal either.

I think I'd re-terminate them into surface mount wall boxes for future use. I'd also move the cables to come up behind the skirting board with the wall-box directly above it, but if you didn't want to disturb carpet etc. and create a channel behind the skirting you could, of course, just clip the cables to the skirting.
