Well I've just received (an expected) letter from my employer (I work for Architects) that we're all receiving a 5% pay cut and that furloughing is on the cards for at least some of us and to agree to a change in our contracts to include a furlough clause, I have been working from home this last week or so and I'm to carry on working for the time being and have a call with HR tom so that could change pretty quick I imagine, as the construction industry has largely shut down this was pretty inevitable.

They do not need to change your contract and you don’t have to agree to the pay cut. They could opt for redundancy however. Be careful about agreeing to a pay cut argue for a temporary suspension or reduction in hours.

I'd be very careful signing something as regards to wages. Some crafty firms will be trying to short change employees now and watch out for the wording of things too. They may try and slip something in about paying no redundancy if they fold.

Check out Acas . Maybe some help and advice there.

Well I just had my call with HR, apparently 9 (out of 36) of us have been furloughed already or by the end of the week so I'll see what pans out over the next few weeks ....

Edit I just realised my post was very poorly written, I have not been furloughed yet but 9 others have been.

Are they going to top up the 80% Govt grant? Bit unfair if they don’t and others are still working.

Anyway it will be 80%. I guess as the alternative would be redundancy that doesn't seem so bad.

I, and many of my colleagues, have been furloughed from last Friday for the next 4 weeks on 100% pay.
Those needed to carry on working are getting a 10% bonus on their hourly rate and the whole board of directors have taken a 25% pay cut as from last Friday.

The situation will be reviewed after 4 weeks and we may be put back to 80% but they will try to keep it at 100%
Everything depends on how long this is going to go on for. The quicker it's over the better for everyone.

I work for a company that supplies the building industry with the much loved chipboard, still working but the furloughing is just around the corner, its the after thats the issue,do you get taken back on with the same conditions, rates of pay etc, this doesn't seemed to have been touched on.Who knows how long it'll last, into the Autumn?

I think it's an unwritten rule, (or maybe somewhere it is in writing), that after you have been furloughed and are requested to return to work it will be on the same conditions you were on when you were furloughed. I know my promotion, (and subsequent pay increase), has been set back until everything is back to normal, even if I return to work as cover for someone.

They can bring you back on whatever terms they like. If you don’t t like them then they can offer redundancy. Or if you have less than 2 years service just fire you.

it’s in the companies interest to keep you on 80% because the tax payer /govt. is picking up the tab. They cannot ask you to work while benched however.

Am self employed so I'm out of it at the mo, but my partners business is as of today using a combination of furloughing, 4 day week and redundancies. He's not heard yet what his fate is. He's so busy, very very stressed that I kinda hope he gets furloughed. If he gets made redundant then we will have to live off savings until this is all over.

Sounds like you work for a decent company Conny. Not that many of those about anymore.
