Morning all,

Self-explanatory.

Rear brake pads on an Avensis 2018.

Am I correct in thinking that, as I can't imagine it is a big job, the differential will be piffling?

Thanks in advance :)

I think Toyota have fixed price servicing and repairs, you might be able to get a price from their website.

I understand your question to be; would a main dealer charge about the same to change the pads as an independent?

from main dealers and independents that I know the price could be double or triple. Always worth asking.

Hmm. Independent garage using quality parts and a reasonable hourly rate compared to a main dealer with a much higher hourly rate, parts at retail plus consumables plus vat, could be a £100 difference, more if the main dealer decides the discs are outside the limits but I could be surprised. Get a quote from each first.

I did a Ducati motorcycle recently, all genuine parts (service + belts and valve clearance check), we charged £650 Ducati wanted £1000 exactly same job.

Front discs and pads on A6:
Main dealer and a day work: £580
Me on my drive in 1 hour : £120 (Upgrade to Brembo parts which are used on RS6)

Main dealers normally have bigger buildings i.e. showrooms etc to pay for plus they are required to use diagnostic equipment and special tools that the
OEM's use which are not cheap.

If it's got an electric handbrake it may need plugging in to disable which jumps the price up. Not sure on the avensis though.

Dealers don’t make much money by selling the car itself.....hence the push towards PCP purchases where they can make money on the financing. They omit to tell you that in a few years you would have paid enough to actually own the vehicle, but of course you don’t unless you stump up for a final payment or arrange a new PCP.
Lets hope that if you do buy a car on a PCP you can continue with the payments if you become unemployed or you’ll be left with nothing.
Expect a hard sell on any products/ services the garage can offer, but do the maths first.....they have to pay for the chrome showroom and the 6” heels somehow.

Well,

The tyre place said the rear pads were low.
So I got that price from the independent - £125.

Toyota said it was the front pads and lipped discs, £194 (although it's not clear whether that's discs and pads, replaced, or pads plus some de-lipping......)

So which is it to be, Brig?
I can't see the prices being inclusive of discs, and delipping is basically removing the rust crust from the outside of the disc perimeter......5 mins per side with a hammer.
All discs have a minimum working thickness stamped on (which can never be seen after a couple of weeks) but it's rare that garages will reach for the vernier.
At least, being a Toyota, there's a good chance that all of the bolts will come undone as intended (Citroen please note )

Every respectable garage would have a software to release the electric handbrake or know how to do this without.
On all Vag you don't need the vcds to release the handbrake, it can be unwound manually with an allan key.

Didn't say they wouldn't but they will more than likely charge extra for it
