Hi, I have to install a washing line post, it is galvanised steel,2.4meters long. I want to use postmix concrete to secure it, can anyone please advise how deep would I need to dig a hole and how wide would the hole need to be. Also, are there any tips on how to use the postmix as I understand you have a short time limit to get it right before it sets. Many thanks.

Thank you for your reply but it is for a retractable line, if the pole is 2.5 - 3 meters above ground I will not be able to reach it to take it down.

If you have only 1.8m above ground then washing line sag will leave large items touching the floor.

Rotary washing lines are only about 1.8m high anyway. Depends how tall the OP is doesn't it!
Rotary lines have a short span that sags very little, clotheslines sag the greater the distance. Height of OP is irrelevant [my daughters neighbour uses a pole 5m high you just raise and lower it)

You need 60cm / 2 feet in the ground.

Ideally, the hole should be straight-sided and 15cm / 6 inches in diameter.

If the ground's not too crumbly or full of rubble, the best way to dig a neat hole is with a post hole digger. Otherwise, a trench or drain spade or a border spade. Having a sprawling hole at the top will just waste concrete.

The postcrete won't set so quickly that you can't waggle it about a bit until you're happy it's plumb.

Once it's started to go off, you can run a trowel round it to flaunch it slightly so water doesn't pool around the pole.

A house I lived in the (retractable) line was only about 1.8m high slung between fence posts, I just used a washing line prop to raise it up in the middle where it sagged.

Perhaps the OP doesn't want a 5m post in their back garden? For someone actually quite helpful and a seemingly upstanding member of the comunity you certainly have an odd manner on the forum sometimes.

Unless you have a prop, or even two, along the length of the line!

EDIT: Sorry! Beaten to it by FMT!

You can use a pulley system to lower and raise the line. The length of the span is going to be important, as does the height of the other end.

Instructions are on the bag ;)
