I have 2 rooms with freshly skimmed ceilings. They had a single pendant in each before so I don't have anything to gauge light levels from but we like a lot of light.

We are going for 5w cool light lamps in GU10 fittings.

The rooms are both 3.6m x 4m and I was thinking 8 lights in each. Does that sound about right?

Generally I go for 600mm from each wall and then 1200mm centres after that

You'll have to take into account where the Joists are before your final positioning.

That is 40w in each room. Equivalent to around 400w of incandescent. Sounds a lot to me.

I couldn't decide between 8 and 6.

Have joists already marked so as to avoid them.

I was looking at 750mm off the side walls as the suits joist spacings

Spacing, distances and quantity depends on what the room is, and what you need to illuminate. lighting requirements for a kitchen is vastly different to a living room.
Ceiling height also affects how much light gets to the floor, or worktop.

I'd say the minimum spacing for downlighters is as far as possible from me, Personally I can't stand the light from them.

750-800mm from the walls is fine - allows for any big pieces of tall furniture you may end up having.

I usually do the lights around 1200mm apart, sometimes around 1500mm or even a bit more if I can't space them very equally due to joists.
