"Coloured""people

It's just occurred to me that in the UK (London) in the 50's they didn't use the word 'coloured' but on boarding houses etc. the signs actually said 'no blacks, Irish or dogs' so why isn't 'black' banned?

All of this nonsense:
White, black, blue, green...
Who gives a damn???
All black people I know don't take any offence at being described as black and they refer to themselves as black.
I don't get offended being described as white (and I'm not white) and I refer to myself as white.
This is just another attempt by the thought & speech police to twist every word and make it racist or at least politically incorrect.
That guy in the video is right: English department renamed Department of English...
What a lot of boll@x!

Why? I fail to see the difference between 'coloured' and 'of colour'.

Because you're only looking at the words.
As said before, context and intent are everything.

There is still mostly nothing wrong with the word "coloured", in itself. But, because segregation era signage and people used it to identify the discriminated against, it does have negative meaning.

Like "gammon" being used as an insult. The insult is the specific definition at the time, the context, and the intent.

That's fine call me a 'person of gammon' and i won't feel offended?!

;)

I agree completely its context and intent, i don't believe in any way him saying coloured sounded in anyway malicious, wrong it seems in this day n age but oh my..i think that 2nd video summarised it perfectly.

If you (or anyone else) is hell-bent on feeling offended, I dare say you or they will be able to find your / their reason or excuse to.
It's just the way of the world.

Why don't we wear all these words down so they ban all of them.

We can then just gorp at each other.

Why? I fail to see the difference between 'coloured' and 'of colour'.
So you chose to ignore the history of 'coloured" and want to lump it in with all words used in that era? What - any word, even if it had no meaning? Ok....

Sometimes a word isn't 'just a word'. If a whole bunch of people, who let's face it had been treated badly, feel like they no longer wish to see in usage something from that era, then I don't have a problem with it. Why on earth would any decent person who has any respect for his fellow man intentionally either dismiss that opinion, or downplay it because hey man, it's just a word?

If you think Greg was bad then compare to TV pundit Ron Atkinson sacked for racist remark

Thursday 22 Apr 2004 07.43 BST
These are not My Words.

Ron Atkinson, the ITV football pundit, yesterday resigned after racist comments about the Chelsea player Marcel Desailly were broadcast around the world.

The remarks, made when viewers in Britain were watching post-match analysis of the Monaco v Chelsea Champions League semi-final first leg match, were broadcast in several places in the Middle East, including Dubai and Egypt.

Referring to the underwhelming performance of the French defender, Atkinson said: "He's what is known in some schools as a f*cking lazy thick n****r." Atkinson's conversation was picked up by microphones that should have been switched off once the broadcast from the stadium had concluded.

Atkinson, 65, had made a successful career as a media commentator, having been manager of a number of clubs, most famously Manchester United, West Bromwich Albion and Atletico Madrid. While at Old Trafford he won two FA Cups.

An ITV spokesman said: "We don't in any way condone the comments in question, which were not broadcast as part of ITV's coverage but were made in an off-air conversation after the game. It was a regrettable lapse by a respected and experienced broadcaster.

"He immediately offered his resignation which we have accepted."

Atkinson also has a weekly column and tactical chalkboard in the Guardian. A spokesman for the Guardian said last night: "We take this matter extremely seriously and will be talking to Ron Atkinson at the earliest opportunity."

Atkinson said last night: "I made a stupid mistake which I regret. It left me no option but to resign. At the moment I can't believe I did it.

"If you look at my track record as a manager, I was one of the first managers in the game to give black players a chance."

Piara Powar, director of football's anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, said: "I think it is always disappointing to hear someone of his stature make the type of comment that he has. Regardless of his record, that sort of terminology is just simply out of bounds."

A spokeswoman for the Commission for Racial Equality said: "Obviously it's disappointing that someone in a position such as his should make those comments, but he has resigned. He has done the right thing."

Football has moved on so much. To say it hasn't moved on is just mindless. Ive seen tens of bananas chucked at Manchester Citys first Black keeper. Monkey chants drowning grounds.

No. It's moved on a teeny tiny amount. Monkey chants are still to be heard.

A racist Chelsea fan was asked why he was shouting racist insults at the opposing team when Chelsea have a lot of black players. His response? "Well, they're ours".

The length of this thread and the amount of explaining required for some is indicative of just how hard it is to remove bigotry. The fact that the guy heading up an organisation that only last week launched more anti-racism drives doesn't know what terminology is considered acceptable is just batshit.

I thought of Big Ron, when this Greg stuff happened.
Regardless of Ron's work with black players, what he said was pizz-poor. He gave no-one any other choice, and rightly so.

I heard that quote too ; it was from the eighties. Might have even been the seventies.
To use it to try and justify your position that things are barely better nowadays is ridiculous.

No it was from 2018. But it is a nice demonstration that those who do not wish to move on will always find an excuse as to why the point is irrelevant.

So you think it's ok that monkey chants have been made throughout the last decade because you think one fan made a stupid statement in the 70's?
