I've got 3 UPVC windows that need installing. Is the best tradesman to ask to install this a carpenter?

You could always start by asking one or two small local independent glazing firms if they'd install them. Failing that, a competent general builder or joiner that has this skill in their armory will do the job fine.
Or even a double glazing service engineer/doctor/plastic surgeon who would all have come up through the window fitting ranks, I've found especially on here that pvc windows fitted by builders can be some of the most shoddy, anyone can place a frame in a hole and screw it in, its the getting it square, packing next to the fixings, packing the glass correctly, toeing and heeling where required, trimming up if required and sealing up neatly that they struggle with

It's the details that matter in terms of the overall finish, are you suggesting a carpenter would be the best person.

Carpenter/joiner or better still a window fitter/service engineer yes, whilst a builder wouldn't shy away from fitting a window and there are some good builders on this forum I'm sure but every now and again you see posts on here asking for advice on how to rectify poor fitting and then it transpires it was their builder that said.....'yeah I can do them'! Likewise I couldn't lay 2 bricks straight and level, I'm colour blind so don't touch electrics and plumbing and leaking water scare the crap out of me so never touch it hence I don't venture onto their forums, each to their own

Well meaning people often muck up a job because the job turned out to be more difficult than imagined.

As Crank says go with someone you know is experienced with fitting PVC windows.
Its the tiny things that if missed can cost you a whole new window and refitting to put right.
The common one is people not knowing how and where to seal the cill to the frame. Tiny thing that takes 5 seconds but miss that step and you have leaks and damp patches. If the frame is rendered and plastered in it becomes quite a major job to sort out.

A local upvc one man band is your go to person.
Avoid bigger outfits that follow the salesman then surveyor then installer process.
A carpenter is not the right tradesman, yes such a person may have some experience of window installation, but they probably won't have window surveying training and may not know what to specify to ensure building regs compliance.
You need somebody who is Fensa or Certas registered, so they can self certify the install.
