New light fitting won't turn on

Hi guys, I'm not having much luck with my lights, could anyone offer any assistance please?

I removed my old light fitting as I could not remove the old bulb due to it corroding and the glass part of the bulb came out but not he metal socket.

I took a picture of the old and new setup and I believe I've Connected everything right but it won't turn on. I fitted the new light to another room and it comes on fine so I'm guessing its the cable coming out the ceiling, I didn't think I as rough with it taking the old one out, but where would I start fault finding the cable in the ceiling?

I don't have test equipment but I'm happy to buy some.

The screw on the red wire looks higher? have you screwed into the insulation and not the copper ? Your bare earth wire needs sleeving or taping also.

Is the light fitting one of two that are operated by the same switch ? So both switch on /off together ?

Thanks guys I'll go and check the connections again and make sure I've not screwed onto the insulation.

There is a a double switch that controls two lights, each has their own switch. The other light is fine

Have you done any work on or around the switch ,even loosening the switch plate from the wall ?

Hi Terry, yes its the same switch I replaced recently from this thread after it stopped working following some plastering it was working after I replaced the switch but not with the new light fitting.

If you have tried more than once to connect up the new fitting then I think it's unlikely the connections to it are the problem. Is it possible that there are connections up in the ceiling that you may have disturbed when pulling down the cable to the fitting ? As there is only one cable going to the fitting there has to be a junction box or terminal box etc where that cable connects to the circuits neutral and switched live ,as there is no neutral at your switch.
What's above the light fitting, is it your loft ?

Hi Terry, entirely possible disturbed something despite trying to be gentle.

Its downstairs light so above it would be my landing, carpet and floorboards up next?

I don't but more than happy to nip out and get one. Got tool station, screwfix, wickes and b&q all within 15 mins.

Have you checked the insulation is not crimped as said - if so then a multimeter would be useful or even a screwdriver with a neon tester in.
you can set the multimeter to voltage around the 240v AC range (NOT on DC) and at least check power is getting to the Light itself

See what you can see from below ,pulling the cable down a bit as first step ( power off first )!!
By the way was the old light fitting working ok ,why was the bulb being changed ?if changing bulb because it wasn't lighting up ,it's entirely possible the fault was pre existing ??
