Experienced practical semi skilled construction worker doing skilled jobs?

I've seen pictures and descriptions of jobs that looked ok

Only you know the guy, nobody is going to be able to tell you if hes teachable or not, and only you know if you are prepared to redo things if its done wrong while not supervising, and prepared for that cost.

I couldn't instruct or teach him but could objectively find out what he is good at and focus on that

there's a shortage of good builders where I live, they are all seemingly booked up working towards London and anybody local is busy as anything

When i choose a builder for the home, if they can start in a day or 2 then they need to have a good reason why, otherwise we have to wait a few weeks, In fact around october getting our electrician back to finish the next room on a full re-wire took 8 weeks !!! and to do a cloakroom, asking in August i was quoted by most of the builders we use, November at the earliest possibly later.So did it myself.
It is one of the signs of a good builder , unless a job fell through or just starting out on own

Once you have a few builders you can trust, then make sure you keep them on the books for any future jobs. I have done this with a building team, and got them to quote for about 10 jobs I wanted to do in the year, then i know when ready I can talk to them to get booked in

To use waterproof/damp proof plasterboard straight onto the brickwork with no cavity

From a normal building job point of view it's been a total disaster due to the amount of time it's taken

But from all your other post, of you want to get into the game, a good learning process and you need to look at all the mistakes and understand the root cause to avoid next time, most people dont look at the root cause , just the symptoms and never really learn. Good to make mistakes, just don't make the same mistake twice.

Have you got a list of what you need to do?

You would normally have a builder make any structural changes, plumber, joiner and electrician to do their first bit, plasterer in, then plumber, joined and electrician back to finish.
