40mm strap on boss appears too small

Hi all,

Complete novice, muddling through a bit of plumbing.

We need to rearrange the plumbing for a new sink, washing machine and dishwasher.

There are 2 strap on boss' (one original. And one that my dad and I switched for a new one a few months back when it started leaking, I can't get him down to help anymore so I need to work this one out on my own!!) .

The bottom strap (bottom blue circle) says 40mm on but I can't fit a 40mm pipe in to it? There is a black seal inside. Should I remove that? Or is it just a 32mm strap and the 40mm is the size of the boss the pipe goes in to?

The alternative would be to plumb everything out of the top one, but I think it may be too high? The sink (black line) will finish 9.5cm above the top of the pipe going in to the strap boss (top blue circle). Would that give enough of a drop once we have added a trap etc (yellow line)?

I want to avoid drilling another hole and adding another boss if possible as there is minimal room to fit the straps round the back, and I'm not going to lie, the though of it scares me a little.

Any thoughts or ideas really appreciated.

Thanks,

Ruth

Is the new pipe the same size as the grey pipe shown, if yes then wash the rubber seal with soapy warm water and apply silicone grease to the end of the new pipe, file a smal chamfer to help it in if required.

The higher boss looks far too high for a sink waste to fall to ,although pics can be decieving .
The lower boss appears to have a pipe already fully inserted ,so don't really know what your issue is ?

I am not sure if it's the same size. I was trying to push a 40mm pipe in, but I have been doing a bit more research and it looks like it may be because it's a push fit? Not sure what the difference is between normal 40mm waste and push fit? Maybe just a chamfer. I'll give it a good clean and try it tomorrow.

I need to put different pipework in, that turns immediately to the right as it comes out the boss. The washing machine will be where that old pipework is. That's the old pipework which I have been assuming is smaller. But maybe just push fit pipework? I got a 40mm with a flexible hose, which doesn't appear to fit, but maybe I just need to chamfer the edge and be brutal with it? Or get a push fit 90 degree corner piece.

Solvent weld pipe ,although sold as 40 mm ,is a few mm lager diameter than push fit 40 mm pipe. Does your pipe have ABS printed anywhere on its length ?
Your pic does show some solvent welded fittings ??

OK, stand down!!

I cleaned it up and used a sh%t load of fairy liquid and with a bit brute force I managed to get the flexible connector in.

Note to self, be braver

Next thing, working out the plumbing under the sink. Trying to find a manifold that will connect 2 waste pipes from a 1.5 sink and allow for three spigets (washing machine, dishwasher and condensate).

Like the horizontal one in this image. The orange being the spigets. I'll post a new thread so others can find it easier if need be.

Thanks all for your help and advice
