washing machine waste should have a trap ?

hi this is my washing machine waste pipe, it looks like it should have a longer pipe and a trap to me , or is it ok as it is ?

Left like that, even with nothing connected you will get smells entering the room. So in answer to your question, yes. JP has provided a link.

You need to ensure the 'U' bend of the washing flexible pipe is above the height of the drum top - say about level with the detergent drawer.
 
Before doing anything, probably worth checking whether there is a running trap between that standpipe and the outside drain.

thanks for your help, does this look ok, or should i try to get the pipe more over to the corner away from the electrics ?

also do i need to cut a but off the top of the pipe, its only got 6mn clearance.
 
thanks, that reminds me does the cold need to be a non return one ?
