We have them in the local town. Never give money but will buy a drink or a sandwich/burger.
In Liverpool many years ago, (60's-70's), there was an old woman who used to sit outside a big department store each day, no matter what the weather, She'd been doing it for as long as anyone could remember. I think people called her Katy or Kitty. The story began to circulate that someone had once seen her at the end of the day gather her few belongings together and walk off around the corner to the back of the store. It was then reported she got picked up by a big RR. Eventually the local paper started taking an interest but before they published a full story she was found dead, (no suspicious circumstances). Sometime later the paper did publish a story about her but it was to say she had left a couple of million to charity. No one ever found out who she truly was.

Is it a coincidence that the person who apparently photographed the alleged 'offence' is also showing a 'new Audi' advert?

Scroungers of course can come in all shapes and forms

We used to have a young woman who would ask anyone “Spare 50p for a sandwich". She even took to coming in my workshop and asking me or the trainees. She often sat outside the Co-op asking for sandwich money. I bought her a sandwich and when I tried to give it to her she turned her nose up at it. Haven’t seen her for a few years now. She was only young but looked very old, I think she was an alky.

That is the Roma Gypsies who operate like that.
Roma Gypsies are professional beggers, everyday outside the place i worked at, a white minibus with tinted windows would pull up, the driver would shout to an old lady in the back of the minibus, she would get out and walk over to a bench beside the bank.
She would sit on the bench with a copy of the big issue magazine and a piece of paper with something written in English on it.
As people walked by she would show them the piece of paper with her spiel on it, she obviously could not speak English.
She would sit there on the bench in all weathers, to be honest i used to feel sorry for her.
The local coffee shop used to give her a free coffee and a doughnut about 10 am.
I used to wonder why she carried the big issue magazine, i was told that the magazine was a prop, her gangmaster had her registered as a self employed trader, this meant she was entitled to tax credits and housing benefits, most of this money was syphoned off by the gangmaster and sent back to Romania.
The old girl herself probably got very little out of this scam apart from a free coffee and a doughnut.
That is the racist posters on DIYnot that think like that.
Some posters on DIYnot are persistent racists, everyday, more ore less, I see comments like these. Someone would make a comment about an individual and another would shout out how that behaviour is endemic among a whole ethnic group.

Funny you should mention that. Who mentioned who first in this thread?
I was merely commenting on the content of the picture...

And what did you mean by the word 'ponce'?

What did you mean about the word 'scrounger'?
As the americans say, 'go figure' :)

But you still haven't explained what you meant by 'ponce'...

Maybe I can help you out...

"Someone who seeks to obtain (something) without paying for it or doing anything in return"

Sounding familiar?

Yep. Ponce. That’s exactly my understanding of the word too and that’s what the bloke outside Sainsbury’s does on most days. Thanks for clearing that up. (y)

Say, isn’t that what you do with your illegal music downloads? By your own definition and admission, you must be one too.

I was walking down a back street near the high st early one morning and saw the local Roma Big I ssue beggar being dropped off - by some huge bloke in a Merc. It's a scam. The do-gooders are being taken for mugs.

We don't often get them in our local high street, but there was a regular Roma girl always there selling the BI, which she wasn't able to pronounce properly for around a year. She stopped showing up when the covid lockdowns began. She stood outside certain shop doors, with customers trying to bypass her, I wouldn't be surprised if the shop owners had complained about her.

Our Sainsbury’s ponce has ousted the local Roma girl who stood there all day yakking on her mobile phone while selling the Big Issue.
