Last year was the minimum 2 1/2%

Interestingly, average earnings did quite badly when furloughed people went down to 80% salary.

This year, however, because lots of low-paid people, workers on minimum wage, workers on zero hours contracts and part time gig economy workers have been thrown on the scrap heap, they are no longer being paid, so do not show in the average earnings figures, which therefore look strangely high, and increase is currently showing about 8.1%

Giving pensioners such a high pay rise, when the underclass of low-paid working people has been pushed further into poverty, may seem perverse.

Which of our politicians will attract the pensioners' venom by telling them?

I wonder what rate of pay rise MPs will get.

Probably about 9% above everyone else like they did a number of years ago.

Pensioners have hard times in the past, nobody suggested cutting peoples wages to compensate. That's the whole reason for the triple lock as far as I know. Plus the pension is often taxed so not as generous as it looks.

Extraordinary times... I'm not sure too many pensioners would carp at half that. It's the professional whining classes (pollies) who will cry foul. "Tories lie yet again..." "Triple lock shelved, pensioners cruelly stabbed in the back by Tories!"

Tories are backstabbers by nature...

Especially amongst themselves!

Why we choose to boost pensioner income by 9% when we're only increasing NHS pay by 1.5% is clearly odd.

If we were all in it together any increase should be closer to RPI or CPI for pensioners, and at least that for the NHS.

Not at all odd...

More to be clawed back by private care firms from the public purse! ;)

So for years the government have been shot for pensioners being paid to little, half of them can't afford heating etc,

Now people are complaining they are being paid to much...

Well it sounds very much like you are John..

Really? I thought people have been critical of the triple lock since 2010.

Also, in general can we cut down on the crappy calls to hypocrisy? It's incessant, lazy and boring
