When will an electric car be able to do Paris Dakar?

Supercapacitors seem unlikely. There's never been any plausible models that would have acceptable energy density for volume or weight. And the idea of putting 80kWh in over 3 mins means a rate of 1.6MW, which is pretty intense. We're already down to 20-30 mins to fast charge 70-80% there's not much need.

And would need either scarily high voltages or currents so high you wouldnt be able to heft the connector
 
It won't happen.

Unless they can create solar panels to charge at a fast enough speed, or use the rotating motion of the wheels to recharge the power being used.

In fact I've often wondered that, can they not make an electric car charge itself when in motion?

I thought they already did that - press the brake and the car's motor generates power back to the batteries, regenerative braking. It helps, but not enough.

Yup, you can even recharge an EV by towing them, although it's the least efficient way of doing anything ever.

Do leccy cars have ac? Do they even have heating?

What happens in a bad winter when they get stuck in snow with a rapidly discharging battery because you're trying to keep warm? What happens when the snow thaws and the motorways are littered with hundreds or thousands of immobile cars with dead batteries?
 
And possibly batteries so dead that they are permanently damaged, auxiliary batteries dead so that charging the main ones cant be started, parking brakes cant be released.

Air suspension pumps?

People are going to have to be prepared for

a) being stuck in an unheated car

b) being stuck in it for longer than they would if it was petrol/diesel

and make sure they have an emergency kit - a few space blankets, some fruit/nut/cereal bars and a bottle of water dont take up much room
 
Maybe it's best to carry a Jerry can of petrol in the EV.
At least it can be torched to get warm.
I heard lithium burns for days.
 
some makes of car already have an auxiliary heater, fuelled by diesel from the tank, that

I have never wanted a diesel car so have no experience of them.

I understand Volkwagen Beetles used to have something similar available as an accessory in the spare boot at the front.

Perhaps future electric cars will have a little charcoal stove, or a paraffin heater, for the winter. Or maybe a chemical heat storage block that you heat up when you plug it in to charge the battery would be simpler and safer.

I have never wanted a diesel car so have no experience of them.
Nothing to do with diesel.

Everything to do with living somewhere so 'kin cold that being able to pre-heat the car before you want to get in it is very handy.

Some cars offer remote-start as an option to do the same thing, if you park the car where its OK to have the engine running.

My old VW Touran has a diesel powered webasto auxiliary heater that heats up the coolant on cold days to protect the engine and warm up the cabin quicker.
 
If only we could build cars simpler so they don't have as many failure prone overly complex systems...
