Have any of you had previous work experience that is totally different to what you do now?
I served my apprenticeship as an armature winder, (repair and refurbishment of electric motors), and started on very small stuff like drills, bus alternators etc. After becoming skilled after 5 years I moved on to high voltage stuff, (HT), and eventually jobs like these.

And beasties like this 6,600v 960HP pump motor consisting of the stator and rotor. Both rewinds and both completed with the aid of a senior apprentice. Took about a month to 6 weeks for each unit to be rewound and then after impregnating in varnish and baking dry we assembled and tested them before sending back to the customer.

These days I'm a maintenance tecchie in a college of FE.

I’ve always been in or around the motor trade since my apprenticeship when leaving school. I concentrated on remote alarms and car phones when they were new out until they became not so profitable as well as doing a stint at domestic alarm systems. I’ve done teaching and training in the motor trade. Before I started work I had an evening job with my mate that was cleaning the canteens and restaurants of Bass Charrington at Bow. My mates mums company had the cleaning contract. Each night after we had finished, we'd pop into the directors dining room, put our feet up on the oak table and take turns to serve each other with cheese, crackers and a glass of port!

When I used to dabble in mobile phones I was given a very memorable Gold number in 1984 that I still have.

I worked in the cotton mill as a draw frame tenter helping make denim and was a picture framer.

I worked in the skydome in Toronto for a few months -it was mostly changing the pitch layout from baseball to American football.

I also worked for a few years at the NLA tower next to East Croydon station.

I worked in a motor repair shop in a steelworks in Australia, DC mill motors re fitting coils & bearings, hated it, charge hands & foremen patrolling the workshop, only let up was sitting on the loo

Just branch banking for Lloyds in Bristol, not CEO of J P Morgan or anything like that. Ended up running a very small branch, but the excitement got too much for me. Customers can be a right PITA too. 10 year stretch and that was it for me. It was in the good old days before things got too serious and you were still allowed to have a laugh. Most Friday afternoons were a blur after long lunch in Black Sheep. I'm far too un-pc for today's world of offices and that type of customer service. Lloyds even do Islamic accounts!!!
