Quicky guys.

Lights upstairs have suddenly stopped working after a friend of a friend changed my parents kitchen strip light, it is the old fashioned type.

Fuse is OK so guessing it's a loose wire in the new downstairs light that is the issue.

Do you think it will be that before taking it to bits?

Did he change the fitting or just the lamp, if the fitting, inside there is likely a feed and a loop feed to the other rooms, that may be where your problem is.
Though usually downstairs will not affect upstairs.

When he fixed the light up, could he have drilled or damaged anything under the floor.

Might be, but as that is the only thing that has changed since the lights worked, it's a safe bet that that is where the problem is so will have to be 'taken to bits' anyway - if only to determine that the problem is not there.

Yeah guess I'll have a look for them.

Whole new fitting, possible he could have damaged something I suppose as the fixing points into the ceiling are different, guess like I said above I'll have to take it apart and have a look for them.

They are using a torch for now which isn't ideal!!

Probably not that exciting, my guess would be that there is just the one lighting circuit and the upstairs lights are after the kitchen light on that circuit and aren’t connected properly.

Have you checked to see if the upstairs lights work if the kitchen light is left on?

I’d be surprised if this is not an easy fix. Get your mate back, or a qualified spark if in any doubt.

No not tried that, will give it a try. I think it will be straightforward as there were no issues before the fitting was changed.

Here’s your problem right here.
a friend of a friend changed my parents kitchen strip light,
As above, the reason for the problem is that it has not been rewired properly, or a wire has fallen out/broken.
Get the friend of a friend of your parents back to fix what he/she has broken!

Yep lesson learnt for them! He is quite handy they say but obviously electrics are not his thing!

It can happen to anyone, if it broke under the insulation - get him back and give him the chance to fix it before condemning him.
