2025 the end of MS support for Windows 10...?

Seemingly stringent requirements for Win11.

Over the years, I wasted countless hours trying to get linux variants to work on older hardware.

I am not anti-linux but in every case it was easier to install a dodgy copy of windows.

Apple's software support for their phones is impressive (in terms of years). Their support for Macs is vastly inferior to both Windows and Linux.

Just for a "laugh" I once installed Windows 10 on my 2005 Sony Vaio S5XP. It worked but who would want to use a 15/16 year old laptop with a Core2Duo processor? Apple stopped supporting Core2Duo years ago. IIRC they dropped software support for those processors in 2018 (El Capitan).

If the end of life for W10 is 2025, that means that my windows laptop was supported for 20 years. AFAIK the last core2mac was produced in 2010. That equates to 8 years of updates from Apple Vs 20 years from MS, and even more from Linux.

Sorry, I am not questioning your choice of purchase but I do not want anyone to think that buying a Mac will represent better value in terms of longevity. It doesn't, unless you are comparing a £300 windows laptop with a macbook that costs 5 times more.

Granted, you can still use an old mac to surf the web, but your bank will refuse to let you log in to your online banking. The likes of FB won't care though...

Still have a G5 from 2006 , runs windows fine .PC’s of that era take a week just to turn on.
Never had a virus or breakdown in 20 years of owning macs, can’t say that of the pc’s that have been in the home they all failed after a couple of years .

Your G5 only runs windows because of, erm, Microsoft and not because Apple want you to be able to use it.

I have only owned my own computers since 2005. I have never had any malware in that time. I used to provide IT support to home users. I encountered malware on both linux and windows machines, never a virus though. Until recently none of my customers owned macs. I am however aware that hundreds of thousands of Mac owners were infected by the drive by version of FlashBack. Oracle gave MS and Apple details of a Java flaw. MS patched it. Apple couldn't be bothered. Black hats reverse engineered the MS fix to identify the Java flaw. They then attacked servers that they knew that Mac owners would visit. All the victim had to do was visit a hacked site to become infected, they didn't need to click on anything else.

Apple eventually released a patch, at the same time they cleaned infected Macs without ever letting the owner that they had been infected. You say that you have never had a "virus", how would you know though?

It is true that prior to the rise of smartphones, the biggest target vector was windows, but Apples have only been relatively safer because of security through
obscurity. Clever marketing aside, Apple devices are as vulnerable as linux or windows machines.

To add onto Opps point, Mac's have ****e central infrastructure for enterprise environments and are an absolute pain in the arse to support.

I think i will run windows 11 on a virtual machine first before upgrading my main machine, can just spin up a VM on my hypervisor

Featurewise that might end up being case for things you need but then they might bring out something you want plus when they eventually drop security patch support for the OS should be a huge motivating factor to jump ship, especially for corporate environments.

As a Windows Phone 8 owner, I have to admit that the desktop variant was quite jarring. You'd open something in the Metro environment and it would throw you into the regular windows environment.

As a, now, Samsung phone owner, I love the integration with W10. It is even better than MyMobiler under Windows Mobile. Here's hoping that W11 builds on that to support other Android handsets. I guess that the Samsung/microsoft relationship was in response to Microsoft's Windows Phone lawsuits against Samsung.

My computer tells me that it doesn't support Win11; Yay!! It runs W10 perfectly and I was worried it might try to 'upgrade' automatically. Problem solved, I hope.

My laptop is a slightly older i7. Officially not supported by W11 but MS have provided a registry hack to allow me to upgrade if I want to. There however remains confusion about whether they will provide security updates in the future...
