Radiator valve question

Hi. I have 1 radiator in my house with completely different valves to the rest. It doesn't run as hot as the rest of the radiators, which isn't ideal as it serves the biggest space. However, I can't work out how to adjust it, or even if it is possible without replacing a valve.

Below is in the flow side:

The black circle has the numbers 1-8 on it. I can turn the spindle sticking out of it with a pair of pliers, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Apologies if this is a bit of a basic question. I've tried having a google, but suspect I am not getting my terminology quite right! Any advice apprecitated

The right hand valve ( 2nd pic) is a TRV,with the actuator removed. The left valve is a lockshield and turning the shaft fully anticlockwise is it's fully open position.
The TRV centre pin would be fully open,when the actuator is removed ,pushing the pin in would close the valve, but it should spring back to open.
Your system may just need balancing.
 
You will need something between your finger and the pin, to be able to apply enough force to push the pin in against the spring - the side of a pair of pliers should help.
 
Thanks both. Lockshield is fully open and the pin goes in and springs back when pushed. I will have a go at rebalancing. This radiator would have been an addition when the house was extended, so guess it would make sense that it is the one not performing if the system isn't balanced.

The fact that it is an addition, might be the cause - it may be sharing it's water supply with another radiator, rather than having its own, independent pipework. The absent TRV head, suggests the previous owner of the house had the same issue.
 
Ah, that would make sense. We have found a few cut corners in that area... On the list for a revamp in the next couple of years, so perhaps an extra jumper in that room until then! Cheers
 
That TRV pins stuffed if you ever want to put the sensing head back on...your plier marks will abrade the O ring seal.
The numbers on the black ring refer to the setting...the TRV can double-up as a lockshield valve although most are left at the default fully open position (and the conventional lockshield valve used for balancing).
Occasionaly I've found they've been meddled with so despite the lockshield (on the other end of the rad) being wide open the rad doesn't get sufficient flow.

My TRVs (Honeywell, over 25 years old) have an additional throttling gizmo, with an offset screwdriver slot to adjust. If yours has that, it might be worth making sure it's wide open, fully anticlockwise.
